“With 82°E, I hope to inspire us all to connect with our truest, most authentic selves through consistent and humble self-care practices.”
Deepika Padukone
Our co-founder Deepika Padukone believes that skincare and self-care can go hand in hand. In the final edition of our Self-care Month Series, she opens up about some of her most candid experiences and learnings from her own personal journey with skincare and self-care.
On her definition of self-care
When I think of self-care, I think of acts that help me feel centered and recharged. Anything that makes me feel any of those emotions, whether it's going for a swim, pottering around the home, or meeting friends, to me is an act of self-care. But if there’s one important lesson I’ve learnt over the years, it is to practice these acts without guilt.
On her trick to converting a skincare routine into a self-care ritual
There is no doubt that the benefit of a consistent skincare routine is healthy-looking skin.
However, I’ve always believed that by practicing your skincare routine ‘mindfully’, with intention, and without guilt, whether it is for 30 seconds or 30 minutes, you are practicing an act of self-care.
On learning from her worst skincare phases
I’m not sure how many of you are aware but I was a professional badminton player until the age of 16. And even though badminton is an indoor sport, I spent a lot of my time training outdoors in the sun and traveling in harsh weather conditions.
During these formative years, I had no real understanding of skincare or good practices for my skin health. All I did was wash my face with water. No cleansing. No hydrating. And definitely no sunscreen.
It was only in my twenties after I began my modelling and acting career, that I noticed changes in my skin: sun spots, freckles, and pigmentation began to appear, and I started to understand the importance of taking care of my skin. With the realisation that I needed to do more than just ‘wash my face with water’ came my Cleanse, Hydrate, and Protect routine. I’ve found it to be the most simple yet effective routine I’ve practiced. And for anything more complex, I've sought the advice of a dermatologist.
On her mother’s skincare mantra
Growing up, like every young girl, I was hugely influenced by my mother.
Watching my mother practice her ‘less is more’ skincare routine rubbed off on me too, and continues to be my go-to skincare routine. It is also the philosophy that defines all of the skincare products we create at 82°E.
On her three desert island skincare picks
An island is typically hot and humid. So I’d go with the Lotus Splash Cleanser and Ashwagandha Bounce moisturiser. As for my sunscreen, while Turmeric Shield SPF 40 PA+++ is everyone’s favourite, I’d actually go with Patchouli Glow SPF 40 PA+++ for that extra boost of hydration. Touché.
